While I was pregnant with my first child, I decided to head to our local Babies R’Us (RIP) to start working on my registry. I was on bed rest (don’t worry I hobbled my way to a wheel chair), this was one of my first outings in weeks, and I was so excited to pick out things for my baby!
That was until I realized I had absolutely no clue what the differences were between the 15 brands of diapers, 20 types of binkies, and those 25 nearly identical bottles . So here I am on the bottle aisle, emotional, physically, and mentally drained and I literally burst into tears. I had a full on hormone driven break down. I remember thinking “How am I going to be a good mom when I don’t even know what my baby NEEDS *sniffle sniffle.*”
Looking back as a mom of now two children (yes, the first did in fact thrive despite my newness to motherhood), I have no clue why I was that worked up. Babies need love, someone to care for them, and while there are necessities, it’s not like your child will forever hate you because you bought the wrong diaper cream before they were born. But at the time my anxiety was very real and palpable.
So if you are where I was then, or if you are just looking for recommendations, I would love to share with you the best products I have found and why they stand out from the rest. Baby Carriers
My Choice: Baby Tula Explore Baby Carrier
With my first I’m not even sure if these existed yet, so I purchased a Britax Baby Carrier and a Moby Wrap . I still own both and the Moby still looks conspicuously brand new. I know some moms swear by them, but even after watching countless youtube videos I could never seem to get the knots tight enough to feel secure. Plus normally by the time I got my child into it he was beyond unhappy, which meant I then had to remove him from it to calm him down (kind of defeating the whole purpose).
The Britax Carrier still sees some use in our household, especially for shorter trips to the store and when my youngest was very young because I liked the support it gave his lil’ head. Here’s the thing, imagine being carried around suspended by your underwear for potentially hours on end, or if that imagery doesn’t work for you imagine sitting on a barstool with a bike seat attached. All pressure is being put on your bum and privates with little to no support for your upper thigh or hip joint. That doesn’t sound very comfortable does it? Well to me it seems like that’s how it would feel to be in a Britax type carrier for very long (and I don’t think it would make me very happy).
Why the Baby Tula Explore Baby Carrier
See in the picture above how the carrier goes to the baby’s knees? To me that looks like a much more comfortable position to be in for the long haul (and I think my baby agrees). It’s easy to put on and feels secure. It is durable and pretty urp resistant (although it IS machine washable should the need arise). As an added bonus it comes in a variety of patterns and colors so there is sure to be one you will LOVE.
Bottles
My Choice: Playtex Baby Nurser Bottle with Drop-Ins Disposable Liners
Both pregnancies I managed to score a few free different bottles and while I tried several these will always be my favorite. The other bottles just seemed so much more time intensive and limiting. I did use my Medela bottles while I was pumping and feeding because I stored the milk in them and it was easier than transferring, but anytime I used bagged pumped milk or formula I always went to these.
Why the Playtex Baby Nurser Bottle with Drop-Ins Disposable Liners?
With disposable liners these bottles don’t require sterilization between each use which is a HUGE time saver. The only thing you have to clean are the nipples and you are good to go. These bottles make it so easy to go out because instead of lugging around multiple bottles I bring formula, a few drop-in liners in a plastic baggy, a water bottle (to mix the formula with), and a few extra nipples and I am set for the day. Also while these do not advertise as being air free, you can push the liner up from the bottom to remove pretty much all the air.
Sanitizing Product
My Choice: Medela Quick Clean Micro-steam Bags
There are so many sanitizing products out there from sanitizing wipes to sprays to old fashioned boiling water. I’ve done them all. In my experience the sprays and wipes either leave a residue or never seem to get the product clean enough where I feel safe using it. Boiling water is a pain since it always seems to take forever and it never fails that my son wakes up just as the water is boiling (hint: babies and boiling water don’t mix). Enter the product that revolutionized motherhood for me: Medela Quick Clean Micro-steam Bags.
Why Medela Quick Clean Micro-steam Bags:
These could not be easier to use. All you have to do is do a quick wash and rinse of your bottles/ nipples/ breast pump parts (just don’t try it with breast pump tubing), put them in the bag, add the correct amount of water, then microwave. The steam sterilizes every nook and cranny so you KNOW the parts are safe to use. When combined with the bottles I mentioned before, you just have to throw the nipples in there and that’s it! See how easy this motherhood thing can be?
Diapers
My Choice: Luvs diapers or Pampers Swaddlers
This one is going to be highly dependent on your lifestyle and your baby’s skin sensitivity, the truth is you may not know for sure which ones will work best until after your baby is here (luckily most stores have pretty great return policies for unopened diapers). The few diaper blowouts we’ve had over the years have taught me that I personally just don’t have it in me to do cloth diapers, no matter how earth friendly they may be and we definitely don’t have the money for one of those diaper cleaning subscription services.
So it was down to disposable diapers in our household, but there are still so many! Not only are there umpteen different brands but each brand also has different lines. To me the determining factors when it comes to my favorite brands are cost, blowout protection, and skin sensitivity. I’m sure those Seventh Gen diapers are AWESOME, but I just can’t justify spending that kind of money for something that my child is literally going to defecate in. Then that both my children have extremely sensitive skin came into play. I found that most Huggies diapers and even Pampers Baby Dry contributed to their little bums becoming very unhappy.
Why Luvs diapers and Pampers Swaddlers?
With my oldest I primarily used Pampers Swaddlers. I love them because they have great blowout protection and are wonderfully gentle on a baby’s skin. The one downside is that they tend to cost a bit more (although look out for coupons because you can get some great deals). With my youngest money is tighter so we use primarily Luvs diapers. Their blowout protection is pretty great and they haven’t caused any rashes, plus you really can’t beat the price in the diaper world.
Wipes
My Choice: Pampers Sensitive Wipes
I HATE the texture of Huggies wipes, they feel like those adult flushable wipes, which while potentially better for the environment isn’t exactly the texture I want against my sweet baby’s bum. I also find that when we use Huggies wipes we tend to use more. I typically don’t buy expensive wipes so I only have trial packs of them to go by and I didn’t notice any tangible differences to sway me from Pampers. Staying away from dyes and fragrances is an unfortunate must in our home as they seem to always lead to a breakouts, which greatly limits our options.
These are by far the best wipes I’ve used hands down. They are super effective and require just a few to clean up even the most chaotic messes. Their texture is soft and, for those who haven’t had much experience with baby wipes, is closer to the Neutrogena Make up remover wipes I know you’ve used (pro tip now I typically use one of my baby’s wipes to remove make-up, I swear it’s just as effective). They are super gentle and do not contain perfumes, alcohol, parabens, or phenoxyethanol. They also don’t deteriorate during use (a wipe falling apart is a pain when cleaning up your baby’s latest fecal masterpiece). So go forth and buy these wipes, I promise you won’t be sorry and be sure to look out for coupons and sales because you can get them at a really good price!
Diaper Cream
My choice: Baby Anti-Monkey Butt Cream
Both of my children have extremely sensitive skin, meaning I’ve unfortunately had the need for a lot of diaper cream and have pretty much used them all. I’m not a huge fan of Desitin because it always seems to take a ton of applications before you see a visible difference (and depending on the line sometimes it seems to make little difference at all). My runner up is Boudreaux’s Maximum Strength Butt Paste because it is effective, but the one downside is it always seems to rub off into the diaper, leaving pretty much nothing behind as soon as diaper change time is over.
Why Baby Anti-Monkey Butt Cream?
While the primary ingredient (Zinc Oxide) is the same as most other diaper creams, this is one of the few that contains calamine and calendula extract. If you’ve ever had Chicken Pox or gotten too close to Poison Ivy, calamine probably sounds pretty familiar and I’m sure you will remember wishing you could just live in a bath of the stuff. Other than the incredible staying power and visible results this product offers, one of the reasons it is at the top of my list is that I know it actually alleviates some of my darling’s discomfort. I have been known to use Anti-Monkey Butt Cream myself anytime I had any skin irritation ranging from chafing to insect bites and after applying at night by morning I feel so much better, so I KNOW first hand it works.
Lotion
My Choice: Noodle & Boo Super Soft Lotion
There are literally hundreds of baby lotions out there and while I can’t claim to have tried them all (really who can?), I’ve tried A LOT. Some have been decent, some are sticky, some contain ingredients which seem to irritate my little love’s skin, some are just too darn expensive to justify, and others I just cannot stand the smell.
My first experience with Noodle & Boo Super Soft Lotion came as a sample in a baby box subscription I had with my first child. I fell in love and was all too sad when that little sample was gone. So I looked for it in stores and online and was disheartened to find that it was pretty much only sold in high end stores like Neimen Marcus and was just too expensive for me to go for. So I carried on and used my second favorite: Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion instead.
Then imagine my surprise while shopping for baby number two when I found Noodle & Boo Super Soft Lotion sitting on the shelf at Buy Buy Baby and on Amazon for a much more reasonable price! I got a bottle, then my mom tried some and she got a bottle for herself, and it is now the go to lotion in all of my family’s homes.
Why Noodle & Boo Super Soft Lotion?
There are so many things I love about this lotion it’s going to be hard to pick out the best to share. I guess a good place to start is it makes ANYONE’S skin silky soft, and I do mean anyone’s (even my works-outside-for-a-living husband). The smell is clean and subtle, and it doesn’t mask that newborn smell that makes all of us moms swoon. It is lightweight and leaves no residue, while being extremely effective and gentle. Seriously it is one of the best products out there for baby and non-baby alike.
I’ve tried quite a few baby washes over the years and I have to say one of the most important factors is that it doesn’t dry out my baby’s skin or cause any irritation. Of course, it also needs to be effective in cleaning off the various and copious amounts of sweat, urp, flung creamed peas, and other unmentionables my child manages to pack into every crevice on his adorable lil’ body. Believe it or not few products I’ve tried actually manage to fulfill all these (pretty basic) requirements.
Why Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash ?
It may not be the most expensive or the one that smells the best, but this body soap is gentle and effective. I have never once had my child break out after bath time when using this product and he is always squeaky clean. It doesn’t have much of a smell to it, but really thats fine by me because I love Eau de Clean Baby.
I will preface this one by saying each baby is highly different when it comes to binky preferences (if they will take one at all). My oldest son had a strong oral soothing instinct and he loved his binkies (perhaps a bit too much). My youngest wants nothing to do with any binky ever made and we tried about 10 different brands, he literally gagged at every single one. So while I loved MAM Orthodontic Pacifiers with my first be warned that your child may have different preferences or may not like them at all.
Why the MAM Orthodontic Pacifier?
The big reason I loved MAM binkies is that despite years of use they did not impact my son’s tooth or jaw development. Binkies get a bad rep for causing all sorts of problems which is why picking one that won’t cause them is a huge deal. Always check with your doctor for their advice on binkies because they can cause long lasting struggles, but in my case my doctor said that if I ever wanted my nipple out of my son’s mouth he was going to have to use one and even SIDS guidelines recommend using one while they sleep. These binkies also come in all different sizes for different ages which ensures a perfect fit, they can even be tossed in microwavable sanitizer bags or steamed in their carrying cases with a little bit of water making cleaning them a breeze. Plus they come in all sorts of cute designs (even glow-in-the-dark) and that doesn’t hurt.
With my oldest I primarily used the HALO SleepSack Swaddle because the wrap around velcro swaddle made it pretty easy. Unfortunately the one thing I did not like about this swaddle is that when my son would wiggle the wrap part would rise up sometimes all the way to his face. In my experience this wasn’t an issue when he was a newborn. Then as he gained strength it became a more common occurrence, no matter how tightly I wrapped that thing. So I had to abandon swaddling and forgo sleep earlier than I would have liked.
After having my youngest and experiencing the same issues, I came across the Love to Dream zip up swaddle. Now it is seriously one of the products I could not live without. I don’t have to worry about anything rising up to cover his face, and it works to get him to sleep and STAY asleep like a charm.
Why the Love To Dream Swaddle?
This one may not look like your typical infant swaddle, their hands go up not down, there is no origami required, but I swear it works. My baby sleeps like nobody’s business in this thing, it is super easy to put on, and it has a two way zipper so you don’t have to remove it all the way for late night diaper changes. The material is super soft and my husband’s favorite feature is the butt pocket for non- intrusive diaper checks, plus it makes them look like a SUPER cute peapod. Also as your child gets older they also have the Love To Dream Swaddle- 50/50 to gently transition from being swaddled, which we’ve just recently started to use.
Car Seat
My Choice: Chicco KeyFit 30 Zip Infant Car Seat
There are a lot of car seats out there at all price points and with all sorts of gimmicks. With my oldest I used the Graco SnugRide and I don’t have anything particularly bad to say about it. But when shopping for my youngest I checked the safety ratings and there was a new kid in town! The Chicco KeyFit has become extremely popular and a large part of that has to do with stellar safety ratings (which is kind of the whole point when it comes to carseats). I’ve also found in some ways it’s easier to adjust straps when needed than my Graco was.
My husband was kind of disappointed that I didn’t consider the 4moms Self-Installing Car Seat more in depth because he just loved the tech aspect and that it has it’s very own app. But I just couldn’t justify spending that kind of money on a car seat when there were so few reviews, no matter how “cool” it seemed.
Why the Chicco KeyFit 30 Zip Infant Car Seat?
This car seat has a stellar safety rating which is a must have for any carseat you consider because you want that baby safe! In addition the strap tightener makes it extremely easy to make sure your lil’ one is strapped in securely. My husband loves that the strap height is so much easier to adjust than our old one (which pretty much required you to disassemble the whole thing). The base has a level indicator and each time you place the car seat in the base there is an audible “click” to let you know your child is safe and secure. In addition the Keyfit Zip has an extendable canopy to offer adequate sun protection no matter what.
Stroller
My Choice: Baby Jogger City Mini
I actually have purchased this same exact stroller twice, albeit in different colors. The first one was incorrectly stored after we stopped using it with my first, and although I looked at newer models, I knew that I had to have the same one for my youngest. Few other models are as easy to use, resilient, and adaptable as this one and I guarantee if you take a “test drive” around your local baby store you will see what I mean.
Why the Baby Jogger City Mini?
The steering on this stroller can’t be beat, I often end up pushing the stroller while simultaneously pulling a shopping cart around our local Target, so being able to steer one handed is kind of important. The one strap fold makes it extremely easy to collapse whenever you head home and the brand makes quite a few carseat adapters so leaving baby in their carseat is a breeze.
High Chair
My Choice: Graco 6-in-1 Convertible High Chair Seating System
There are a lot of high chairs on the market these days of all shapes and sizes. Personally I prefer a stand alone high chair because it seems more sturdy for all age ranges vs the ones that clip to a table or a chair. With my oldest I had a regular Graco high chair. I loved the wheels, how sturdy it was, that it was foldable, and that it was fairly easy to clean. Then while pregnant with my youngest, I found Graco had created a more versatile addition to their line. The Graco Convertible High Chair , this one stole my heart because not only was it the same high chair I previously loved, but it had also been redesigned with an interchangeable top piece so it could be converted to a newborn seat for the earlier months as well as a booster for older children.
Why the Graco 6-in-1 Convertible High Chair Seating System?
It has all the features of a regular Graco high chair plus additions to make it suitable for newborns and older children. It is sturdy, easy to clean, foldable, and has wheels so you can easily move it around the house as you cook, clean, or do whatever else needs to be done. The newborn seat comes with a vibrate option to soothe a fussy baby and is super soft and comfortable ( my baby certainly hasn’t complained). The height is easily adjustable so you can personalize it to your needs. In the end, to me the versatility is truly what makes this “high chair” stand out and worth the investment.
Tub
My choice: Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Sling ‘n Seat Tub
Maybe you are wondering if you even really need a baby tub, I mean you already have a tub and there is always the sink right? In my experience a baby tub makes bath time so much easier because wet babies are SLIPPERY and because when I used to give my oldest baths in the sink I was always going through mental gymnastics as to whether I actually cleaned the sink well enough so he didn’t catch some horrific disease. Having a decent baby tub helps on both counts because a) it will do the majority of the holding for you if you get the right tub and b) they are in my experience much more hygienic and easier to thoroughly clean than the kitchen sink.
Why the Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Sling ‘n Seat Tub?
I love that this product grows with your baby. It comes with an infant “hammock” which is perfect for younger babies and does a great job at gently cradling them so you can focus on the task at hand. The base’s design even allows you to position the tub over the sink securely, so you don’t have to do those infant baths kneeling with your knees hating you. It comes with a seat for when your baby is able to sit and it supports them just enough where you don’t have to have as many nightmares about baby falling face first into the water (although obviously you do need to ALWAYS watch them closely during bath time). Then for older babies you can use just the tub to help cut down on the amount of water you have to use per bath. I’ve found that this tub is easy to clean (because yes poop accidents DO happen even in bath time) and the plug at the bottom makes it super easy to drain when bath time is done.
Breastfeeding pillow
My Choice: Boppy Two-Sided Breastfeeding Pillow
With my first son the original Boppy was all the rage so of course I got it and I wasn’t terribly impressed. I will say it was a decent enough tummy time pillow as my baby got older, but when it came to breastfeeding it left a lot to be desired. So when I was pregnant with my youngest I did more research and narrowed it down to the My Brest Friend Original Nursing Pillow and the Boppy Two-Sided Breastfeeding Pillow. In the end, both had pretty great reviews so I headed to the store to look at them. I am not a skinny minnie by any means and looking at the my breast friend pillow I wasn’t sure if it was up to the challenge these curves of mine may present. The Boppy on the other hand looked like it would work better for me, so I got it and I have loved it even after I stopped breastfeeding.
Why the Boppy Two-Sided Breastfeeding Pillow?
If you’ve read through this list thus far you’ve probably realized I REALLY like multi-use products and this one is no exception. This product does a great job at supporting breastfeeding and has a more firm surface on one side to really help support a younger baby and allow for easier positioning. The Boppy has a strap which is highly adjustable and does a great job at keeping the pillow close to you so no abysses form. As my son has gotten older I’ve used the softer side for everything from tummy time to bottle feeding, so I would definitely say this was a worthwhile investment.
Diaper Bag
My choice: Petunia Pickle Bottom City Carryall
You may be wondering why you need advice when it comes to selecting a diaper bag, I mean it’s a place you throw diapers when on the go and a backpack can do that right? Let me tell you a good diaper bag does SO much more and there are few things you will use more. Everytime you leave the house you will be bringing this along and often during meltdowns or diaper changes at the mall being able to find exactly what you need is imperative to you keeping your own cool.
Why the Petunia Pickle Bottom City Carryall?
I will warn you this is my one exception to the cost- conscious rule. With both my babies my one slightly lavish request has been a Petunia Pickle Bottom bag because once you’ve had one anything else just kind of falls short. These bags have pockets on top of pockets making organization a breeze (and at this point I can find where anything is while blindfolded). The detachable padded changing mat makes diaper changes while out and about much more hygienic. The material is easy to wipe-up if a tube of diaper cream explodes (unfortunately I know from experience), and the quality and durability can’t be beat. In my opinion these are also the most stylish bags on the market with pretty patterns for every type of mama to be. So if you can afford one luxury let this be it, and just remember it will in pretty much all ways be replacing that purse you love so much.
Nasal bulb
My choice: BoogieBulb Baby Nasal Aspirator
I have actually tried a fair number of these and I hate to break it to you but when your child is sick none will stop them from looking at you like you are an evil zombie trying to get to their brain. I will admit I have not tried the NoseFrida because as much as I love my children and as many glowing reviews as I’ve seen, I draw the line at literally sucking the snot out of my baby’s nose when there are plenty of alternatives (but if you are into it than definitely check it out). I have one of these electronic suction aspirators sitting in our medicine cabinet, but honestly I felt it was harder to get everything than with a standard bulb. I have used the standard hospital bulb and while it is super effective, I once saw a video of what can grow in those things if incorrectly stored or washed and couldn’t eat my next meal because I was so grossed out.
Why the BoogieBulb Baby Nasal Aspirator?
These nasal bulbs are just as effective as the ones hospital’s use but are so much easier to clean. With the detachable parts you can visually inspect the bulb and make sure that it is clean before and after use. Unfortunately your baby still won’t like you using it on them but try and remember that it really is for their own good.
Activity Centers
My choice: Baby Einstein 2-in-1 Lights & Sea Activity Gym & Saucer
I’ll be real honest, both my babies have only ever had Baby Einstein activity centers. We have used others at friend’s houses and we have walked down the aisle many a time, but both times I ended up with similar versions from Baby Einstein. Maybe it’s personal bias but these just seem so much sturdier and interactive than the other activity centers on the market.
Why the Baby Einstein 2-in-1 Lights & Sea Activity Gym & Saucer?
This is one sturdy activity center! My son is at the age now where he likes to throw his weight around while playing and we have had ZERO topple over scares. The height is adjustable, making it a long lasting investment, and both my babies have loved the colorful fish and spinny parts both of their’s included. This one also comes with a tummy time mat which, while a little small, has seen a fair amount of use in our house when I’m too busy (or lazy) to pull the larger one we own out. I can always buy myself a few extra minutes to cook or write by turning on the light/sound option and I know first hand that their customer service is wonderful!
Monitors
My choices: The Owlet Smart Sock 2 Baby Monitor and The Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor
I’ve decided to put two of my favorite monitors in this segment. While they are extremely different, both serve the same overall purpose: letting you know your baby is okay. With my first child we lived in a really small apartment, so I didn’t need a baby monitor with him an arms reach away. I did look into cardiorespiratory monitors, but the ones at that time didn’t have great reviews and while some people loved them I read of far too many nighttime scares to make me want to buy one.
Things have changed and now with our larger home we did need an infant monitor, luckily my dad was all into it seeing as it pertained to the safety of his new grandson and bought us a pretty awesome one. Baby monitors have come a long way and now come equipped with everything from night vision to app monitoring and while maybe not everyone needs all that fancy stuff, they are pretty nifty if you can afford it. The Owlet on the other hand was the ONE thing I just had to have my most recent pregnancy. I love it and have come to rely on it far more than I ever expected and highly recommend it to anyone.
Why The Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor?
This is pretty much everything you could ask for in a baby monitor and more. It comes with Infrared night vision, the ability to remotely adjust the camera, and a nifty portable video monitor. You can set up alerts and even remotely view the temperature in your child’s room! For households with multiple young children, you can add additional cameras and link them all to the same monitor. You can also buy an additional lens pack for the camera which allows you to have a wide angle view of the room. We thankfully haven’t had any issues but I’ve read that the customer service for this product is out of this world and that the company is extremely responsive.
Why the Owlet Smart Sock 2 Baby Monitor?
If one baby product has changed my life it would be this one. First let me be clear, The American Academy of Pediatrics does not endorse the use of Cardiorespiratory monitors to reduce the risk of SIDS, which makes it especially important not to go against any SIDS guidelines even when using the Owlet. That being said, the Owlet has given me a peace of mind I only wish I would have had with my first child. From the first night after he was born, I was always terrified he would aspirate in his sleep or some crazy thing would happen and I wouldn’t hear him needing me, which led to a lot of sleepless nights. With my youngest the Owlet has helped me rest assured he is okay while I sleep. I have also used the app to check his heart rate to see how deep asleep he really is before hopping in the shower. The app is easy to use and while we have had 4 connection issues leading to false alarms (and near heart attacks), I really don’t think over the course of 6 months that is a bad record, and it has let me know that the Owlet actually does it’s job!
Swings/ bouncers
My Advice: Borrow or Second Hand Shop
I know, with all the awesome products I’ve clued you into so far, you really want to know what swing I’m going to recommend. I’m sorry to let you down but the truth is, in good faith, I cannot recommend any swings. I have tried countless swings and bouncers from the Mamaroo to the Fisher Price Bouncer, I have owned at least 4, I have tried them at every friend’s house who has babies, and my babies hated them all. The longest either of my children has lasted in ANY bouncer or swing is 5 minutes. So instead of giving you my choice, let me give you my advice, before you spend your hard earned money on any bouncer or swing try to borrow them so you can see if your child likes it. If you can’t borrow one, then try Once Upon A Child or garage sales because nothing drives me crazier than buying a product and never being able to use it.
I know this has been a bit of a long read but if you made it this far you know pretty much everything I know about the best baby products after 6 years, 2 kids, and figuring things out the hard way. I hope you (and more importantly your baby) love everything you buy whether on this list or not and just remember if they don’t, kids are extremely resilient!
