The Best Free White Noise to Help Your Baby Sleep

There are all sorts of gizmos that claim to help babies sleep better at night.

Many of these expensive bobbles utilize “white noise technology.” While that may sound really fancy, in reality it is simply technology based on the premise that babies sleep better when there is a consistent sound masking other noises.

And there are a ton of FREE sources of white noise already around your home!

I have two children and have never bought any white noise products (despite my babies loving white noise), because I have found several things that work just as well (or maybe even better) that don’t cost me an extra dime.

Prime Movies

As a prime member these come free with my subscription (which I’ve had for years).

One day while trying to get my child to stay asleep during naptime so I could get things done, I got desperate. In my desperation I searched our Amazon Xbox app for “lullaby” and was pleasantly surprised to find tons of results.

The one I’ve found works the best is Baby Sleep Music – Gentle Lullabies for Babies, just be sure to restart it before it ends!

Honestly I don’t know what we would do without two-day free shipping with a new baby in our house.

The Vent Fan

This is perhaps a little odd but my oldest child slept in the kitchen for two months when he was a baby.

He couldn’t seem to stay asleep without a fair amount of white noise and the vent fan worked like a charm every single night. Now I sometimes use the vent fan for our youngest every time he takes a nap. On the lowest setting it’s just loud enough to mask me moving about the house and keeps my lil’ one asleep, plus other than electricity it is free!

Phone Apps

There are a TON of free white noise apps available for that device that you are currently holding.

We’ve tried a few but I REALLY like RelaxMelodies. They do offer in-app purchases, but I have never felt the need to pay anything.

The “heavy rain” mode helps our little one stay asleep and almost succeeds at drowning out my husband’s snoring.

What makes this app stand out for me is that you can layer the different sounds to create one with a cadence and pitch that works for you and your baby.

(For the record I am not an affiliate or otherwise associated with this app other than as a user.)

Radio/ TV

With my oldest I still had one of those enormous box TVs that weighed a ton and took up a fifth of the living room. I may not have loved the way that TV looked but one perk was that it was still capable of having a screen filled with static and the low crackle that went along with it.

My current TV’s have no such function, because apparently they didn’t keep my baby’s sleeping habits in mind when designing it ( how rude).

So I got resourceful and figured out that radio static is almost just as good. Just be sure to find a channel where there are little to no audible bursts because that will kind of defeat the whole purpose.

Hopefully one of these free white noise sources works for your little one! I know in the beginning it was the ONLY way I got any sleep.

If you are struggling and can’t remember the last truly restful sleep YOU’ve had, hang in there mama I PROMISE it gets easier.
