For four years and counting my son has been ALL about dinosaurs. He could name more than 20 by the age of 4, and when he was 5 he got his very own dinosaur oasis as his room (complete with this awesome DIY mural). This also means I have A LOT of experience picking out unique and awesome dinosaur gifts.
At times I felt like he owned every dinosaur toy known to man, but I always managed to find just a few more every holiday. So if you have a little dinosaur lover in your life this is the ONLY gift guide you will ever need. Whether it’s your son, daughter, grandson, or niece, I can guarantee there is something on this list they don’t have and I’m here to give you the low-down on them all.

Zoomer Dino
I know cute isn’t what you normally think of when you think of dinosaurs, but I cannot emphasize enough how CUTE this dinosaur robot is. It is recommended for ages 5 and up but my son received it when he was younger and “training” it became a fun family activity for us to do together.
Zoomer zooms around your hardwoods balanced on two legs (although he does not fair very well on carpet) and responds to hand commands which allow you train him. You can teach this little guy to dance, roar, chomp, and even follow you around like your own dino sidekick!
Imaginext Dinosaur Toys
No Dinosaur list would be complete without this set of toys, although I will admit having a love-hate relationship with them at times. On one hand they are pretty durable, have lots of interactive elements, and my son loves actually playing with them. On the other hand while the smaller sets are a safe bet, the bigger ones should come with a huge waving flag that say lots of assembly required.
My son received the Ultra T-Rex for Christmas one year and I still have nightmares about opening that box and finding tons of little pieces that all had to be assembled. That being said once we actually got to it (before the little pieces were scattered to the four corners of the Earth) it was easy to out together, albeit a bit tedious.
Dinosaur Play Backpack
I think this has been one of my son’s most played with items in his dinosaur collection. I know you are probably thinking how does one “play” with a backpack? But this is no ordinary backpack, it unfurls into an awesome play scene so your child can let their imagination take flight.
A tip from me to you, it also doubles as a great storage solution for all the little dinosaur figurines your child will undoubtedly collect. Plus it is an extremely easy grab and grow toy to take with them to the grandparents’ house, play dates, or on trips.
The bag itself does not come with a ton of dinosaur figurines so be sure to pick up a few extra if your child doesn’t have some already!
Dinosaur Lego Sets
What kid doesn’t like legos (if even just for the laugh-worthy image of there parents hopping around one one foot)? Lego has entire lines of lego sets, including some pretty neat ones inspired by jurassic world, which are fun to play with even if your kid isn’t old enough for the gore in the movies.
If you are a lego novice Lego Duplo sets are recommended for ages 2-5 because the pieces are large enough where they are easier to manipulate and don’t pose quite as much of a choking hazard. Lego Junior sets are recommended for ages 4-7 because the pieces are small enough to present a choking hazard for younger kids, but the directions are fairly easy. Other Lego sets like Lego Creator are recommended for kids aged 7-12 because the pieces are small and the directions are more intensive.
Below I have included a few of each so be sure to pick the ones that match your child’s age!
Toybox Playset
Along the same lines as the Dinosaur Play Backpack, but not quite as portable, this useful storage box also expands into a rather large play area for your kids to play with their dinosaur figurines. It is one of my favorite dino gifts he has ever received because of it’s multifunctionalism.
Playskool Heroes Dinosaurs
I actually LOVE this line (and my son does too). These toys are meant for kids as young as 3 meaning they are hardy and have never once come apart even during the roughest playtimes (if only I could say the same about all of his toys, RIP now-headless-Hulk). If your child is older don’t be too worried my son is 6 and still plays with these regularly.
Vtech Switch & Go Dinos
I don’t know what it is but kids seem to love toys that transform into something else, which would explain why these Switch & Go Dinos have been such a hit our household. These nifty Dino toys transform into everything from helicopters to cars with just a few easy to do movements. In other words this means that one moment your child can be pecking at you with a Pterodactyl and the next you are being run over by a car (true story, are times than I’d like to admit).
Fossil kits
I remember back in the day my favorite science museum had a huge dino dig exhibit outside and think it is AWESOME that you can now bring home that fun. Let your child unleash their inner paleontologist with these fun Fossil kits (just make sure they do them over a cookie tray because they do tend to be a bit messy!
A helpful hint if the budget is tight: you can also DIY dino dig excavation kits using some Plaster of Paris, water, a few dinosaur figurines, and a cheap tupperware container.
Dinosaur Racetrack
Any kid can tell you cars are awesome. They can also tell you that dinosaurs are awesome. Cars + dinosaurs is mind-blowingly awesome. This set is sure to impress your little dino lover because it extremely interactive with multiple ways to arrange the track and can also be easily expanded with extra track sets for even more possibilities!
Dinosaur Painting Kits
I always keep a few painting kits around for rainy day activities (because if not kept busy my kids lose their mind which leads to me losing my mind). They are always a hit and are a great way for kids to explore their creative side and create some personalized room decor that they (and you) will cherish for a long time to come!
Construct and Play Dinosaur Kit
Let your kids figure out to take apart and re-build their own dinosaur toys with this awesome STEM activity. Your kids can learn how to use tools to accomplish a goal, improve their fine motor skills, and learn how thing fit together and come apart all while having fun. Who said learning had to be boring?!?
Family Movies Starring Dinosaurs!
In this age of streaming, I can attest to that us parentis still LIVE by DVDs. Some of these dinosaurs classics aren’t even on any streaming networks and are must-watch movies with your little prehistoric connoisseurs.
Kid-appropriate Educational DVDs
Want to expand your child’s mind? These DVDs are sure to be a hit amongst kiddos who want ALL the facts. They can answer so many questions, although be warned I’m sure they will still find 5 million and 3 to ask you as well.
Dinosaur Christmas Books
These may not be the classics but I guarantee they will be read over and over again in the months until Christmas (and all year round if your child is like mine).
Awesome Informative Dinosaur Books
My son loved flipping through the pages and soaking up the images in these books when he was younger, and now they are some of his favorite books to bring to show and tell!
Cute Dinosaur Books
These books aren’t educational but they ARE great stories to read to your kids at bedtime!
Dinosaur Sticker Books
Because what kid doesn’t like stickers?! Honestly I’m not a huge fan of plain sticker sheets because they end up ALL over the house, all over me, all over the baby. These Sticker books offer a great solution because they give your children someplace to stick the stickers (No Goo Gone required).
Dinosaur Coloring Books and Mess-Free Coloring Pads
Let your child color outside of the lines with these awesome coloring books! Maybe even up the ante by buying these dinosaur crayons or making your own using this super cute Dino mould!
Dinosaur 2D Puzzles
Puzzles are a great way for your child to expand upon logic and spatial reasoning skills, they are also an awesome family activity if family fun night is getting a bit stale. These roll up mats make it extremely easy to pack the smaller puzzles up while you are short on time!
One helpful hint, after you are done with the puzzle consider putting it in a poster frame instead of tearing it up and reboxing it. We use our completed dinosaur puzzles as part of my son’s room decor.
Chunky and Wood Puzzles
Big Stuffed Dinosaurs
I know stuffed animals are a bit of a parent’s nemesis. However my son’s eyes have always grown wide and full of excitement at the site of some of these oversized plush dinos. They have become part of his room decoration by now so no complaints here!
Give Their Room a Makeover!
One Christmas eve we went full stop and decked my son’s room out in dinosaur stuff while he was with family. Then we moved and his dinosaur room got an even cooler makeover.
I’m a BIG fan of functional gifts because they get used time and time again, are cost conscious, and tend to make a big impact when done right. So why not transform your little one’s room into the prehistoric oasis they have been dreaming of this holiday?
